2023 Venice Italy
Where Perspective Shifted
Venice marked a turning point in our travel story. It wasn’t just about crossing oceans or checking off cities. It was about perspective — learning to move at a different pace and experience the world more intentionally.

Venice wasn’t just another stop on a map for us. It was the place where travel became something more. We had already experienced Hawaii, the trip that reminded us of the need for renewal. But Venice felt different. It didn’t just help us rest. It gave us perspective.
There’s a certain romance about Venice. No cars. No rush. Just narrow walkways, canals, musicians on street corners, and a rhythm that feels almost untouched by time.
Yes, it’s touristy. But it never felt hurried.
One morning, we woke up early and set out in search of coffee. Our first stop was Piazza De San Marco. It seemed the most likely place to find an early morning café. Except…nothing was open.
But when we stepped into the square, we stopped in our tracks. The day before, it had been packed. Thousands of people shoulder to shoulder. That morning, it was empty. Just the two of us and one lone photographer.
We stood there for a minute, taking it all in, before continuing our wandering search for coffee.
The streets were quiet. Maybe a dozen people out. Gondolas rocking gently against each other. The light reflecting off the canals. The sound of our own footsteps echoing through narrow corridors, broken only by the soft movement of water against the canals.
Eventually, we gave up and started heading back toward the hotel. Convinced they would have some coffee waiting for us. And about a block away from the hotel, we finally found it. A small café that just opened its doors. A few stools at the bar. A handful of outdoor tables.
By then, the coffee almost seemed secondary. What we had stumbled into was something better, a chance to experience the city before it woke up.
Moments like that have a way of changing how you see a place.
Before that trip, international travel had always seemed “big.” Complicated. Distant. Venice changed that. It made the world feel both smaller and larger at the same time.
Smaller — because suddenly it didn’t feel unreachable.
Larger — because we realized just how many stories were unfolding beyond our own.
Travel didn’t just expand our map. It expanded our awareness. And once you see that, it becomes harder to live as if your world is the only one that matters.
Venice slowed us down. It reminded us that every place has its own rhythm. Every person has their own story. Even the ones right next to ours.
Hawaii woke us up to the need for renewal.
Venice showed us what perspective feels like.
And from that point forward, travel wasn’t just about getting away. It was about seeing differently.
Normally, we don’t go back to the same place. There are too many corners of the world still waiting to be explored. But life has a funny way of circling back sometimes.
The company we work for chose Venice as the destination for a special anniversary trip this year. So unexpectedly… we get to go back.
And this time, we’ll walk those same canals and quiet streets with a deeper appreciation for the place that first opened our eyes to the world beyond our own.
Adventure, on Purpose.
